It all started with a seed of hope! The local employees of CHS made a founding commitment of $10,000 to Fairmont’s Park and Recreation Board with the hope to make playgrounds in the Fairmont area more accessible to those with disabilities. The initial hope was to add supportive swings to existing parks in the area.
Those involved with the initial gift quickly realized that we, as a community, could do so much more. Supportive swings are still difficult for caregivers to access and they limit children to a passive, independent experience. We want to give all children, regardless of ability, the opportunity to fully engage in play and to do so in an accessible, inclusive space that brings all children together.
The Adventure Playground project was brought to life to make these dreams come true. The unique design of this inclusive playground includes accessible surfaces and equipment to make play possible for all. The design also provides equipment that has been specifically designed to engage kids in play together, to empower them through interaction, and to build valuable social skills.
The power of this concept drew a collection of community members who are each passionate and personally committed to this vision. The Adventure Playground task force includes parents, teachers, special educators, therapists, social service providers, professionals and many more who are working hard to bring the power and benefits of inclusive play to the children and families of southern MN.

"For children with Autism, traditional playgrounds can be very difficult and overwhelming environments. Adventure Playground is designed with equipment that can provide soothing and cozy spaces for them to feel calm when the playground becomes too chaotic. This playground will ensure that all children have the critical advantage of social interaction that comes from outdoor play and exploration with others."
